Episode One

I’ve just rescued a 1982 Honda XL250 that hasn't seen the light of day in 15 years! Now officially a 'classic' at over 40 years old, this bike is getting a second lease on life.

My goal? A full teardown and refresh to bring it back to showroom condition. Here’s the catch: I’m not a mechanic and this is my first-ever project bike. I’ll be learning everything from the frame up, so I’m going to need your advice, tips, and mechanical wisdom to get this vintage dual-sport back on the road.

Episode Two

Welcome back to the Honda XL250R restoration! In Part 2, we’re tackling the messiest—and most satisfying—stage of the build: stripping away 40 years of grease and grime.Today is all about the details. We’re deep-cleaning and degreasing the engine to get it ready for its fresh coat of paint. It’s amazing to see what’s been hiding under decades of dirt! As a first-time restorer, seeing the 'bones' of this iconic thumper shine again is a huge win.In this episode:The ultimate engine degrease.Prepping the cases for paint.Uncovering the classic lines of this 1982 dual-sport.

Episode Three

We’re deep into the Honda XL250R restoration, and today, things are finally starting to look 'new' again!

In Part 3, we’re moving past the grease and into the heavy-duty restoration. I’m getting hands-on with cabinet blasting to strip away 40 years of corrosion and trying my hand at powder coating to give these parts a finish that's tougher (and better looking) than the day they left the factory.

In this episode:

  • The Big Reveal: Watching old, pitted parts transform in the blast cabinet.

  • Powder Coating 104: My first experience with baked-on durability.

  • The Details: Small components, big impact—refurbishing the core of the XL250.

Episode Four

The Honda XL250R restoration just got serious! We’re diving into the oily bits that actually make this classic thumper move.In this episode, I’m tackling the most intimidating part of the build so far: the engine overhaul and the suspension refresh. After 15 years of sitting in the dark, every bolt is a battle, but we’re officially one step closer to that first kickstart. What’s happening in the garage today:The Engine Internals: Taking a look at what 40 years does to a Honda heart.Suspension Revive: Rebuilding the forks/shock to handle the dirt again. The Learning Curve: Dealing with the 'surprises' (and broken bolts) of a first-time restoration.

Episode Five

We are 90% of the way there! The finish line for the Honda XL250R is in sight, but first, I have to face my biggest challenge yet: the carburetor.

If you've ever restored a vintage bike, you know the carb is the 'brain' of the engine—and mine was a total mess after sitting for 15 years. In this episode, I’m diving into the world of jets, needles, and tiny passageways. It wasn’t all smooth sailing; I hit some real roadblocks that tested my 'non-mechanic' patience!

In this episode:

  • The Deep Clean: Scrubbing away 15 years of varnish and stale fuel.

  • The Troubleshooting: Diagnosing why this classic thumper won't play nice.

  • The Final 10%: Prepping the last few components before the big reveal.

Episode Six

The moment is finally here! After months of grease, broken bolts, and a steep learning curve, the 1982 Honda XL250R is ready for its first breath of life in over 15 years.

As a first-time restorer and 'non-mechanic,' this journey has been an absolute rollercoaster. We’ve touched every nut and bolt, polished every inch of this 249cc thumper, and survived the dreaded carburetor rebuild. Today, we find out if all that hard work pays off.

In this series finale:

  • The Walkaround: Seeing this 42-year-old classic back in showroom condition.

  • The Moment of Truth: Will it start? We’re kicking over a legend that’s been silent since the early 2000s.

  • A Massive Thank You: To everyone in the comments who guided me through my first-ever project bike. I literally couldn't have done this without your tips!
